Continuing with this weeks traffic stories, I'd to address the public transit situation in town. Milton does have buses, that's great. I feel that public transit will be one of the keys to freeing Milton from it's snarling traffic. The revival of our bus system has been one of the most positive moves the town has made in recent years.
Some positive things with this new plan are evident looking at transit maps. Most schools and shopping places are accessible on the map. Price is a bit high for such a small system but cheaper than other municipalities. There are a few improvements that should be made.
First off I feel we need more transit hubs and route intersections. The GO Station is a bit out of the way for many residents. Hubs should be set up in Highpoint Business Park, the Mall, the Dairy Plaza, and at Crossroads. I would also like to see service to Highpoint and Crossroads, the latter of which is being planed but hasn't been put into place.
I would also like to see an express route to Mississauga's Medowvail Town Centre. MTC is a busy hub which I use frequently. From there it is possible to get anywhere in the GTA including Brampton and Toronto. The GO Bus does go there but it costs more and doesn't run frequently. Oakville Transit, who runs the busses, already has a deal with Mississauga. They use the South Common Mall on Burnamthorp as a hub. We should do the same. We could also have express routes to Oakville, somewhere that the GO Bus doesn't go.
As for the GO train, well I've already mentioned the problem with it. It doesn't run frequently enough. I would like to see expanded train and bus service on the Milton line. It would be nice to hop on the train and go to a Leafs game or go shopping in Toronto. Anybody who has driven on the Gardener or the 401 will know why it would be a good idea. The Milton line runs through some of the most densely populated and nicest areas of Halton and Peel Regions. Milton, Streetsville, Erindale, Union Station, all great places. Why not give people greater access to them.
Keep up the good work and remember to keep transit growing for out growing town.
