We Asked You Nicely

"We asked you nicely not to hurt anybody, if you keep doing it, we'll have to ask you nicely again." This seeems to be the philosophy of Canada's justice system. Just this past week, six innocent people where gunned down on a busy downtown Toronto street. I say six as it looks like the seventh person shot was somehow involved with the gun fight. One of the innocent people was killed for simply going out shopping with her mother. She was at the wrong place at the wrong time.
This past year, Toronto has been plagued with gun fights right out of old western movies. Over 80 people have been killed. Some would say this statistic is realtively small as some US cities have almost 4 times the murder rate. I find this unacceptable. One murder is too many.

What makes the crime truly disturbing is that one of the people arrested in connection with the shooting was out on parole. He is innocent until proven guilty but he still had a gun on him, while on parole, at the time of his arrest. How the hell did he manage to get a gun on parole! Why wasn't his parole officer checking up on him! Canada's justice system is going down the toilet. You can make the laws as harsh as you want but you can never make liberal judges enforce them. Minimum sentences are needed.

Lets move onto the subject of guns. Politicians like to beat around the bush on the subject of violent crime. It's easy to blame the US for the guns coming into Canada. *sarcasm on* You do know that George W. Bush is handing all the Canadian criminals guns and teaching them to kill. *end Sarcasm* The truth is that criminals are smuggling guns across our border. The border that our border guards are supposed to be checking. It is not the US government's jurisdiction to make sure things don't go into Canada, that's our job, nobody elses. It's time to own up, Paul Martin and his Liberals, Dalton McGuinty, and Mayor Miller or Toronto cannot protect the people who gave them the mandate to govern.

To stop the violence, I propose the following solution which I posted on another website. The shootings are all drug related. Drugs are the great destroyer of modern civilization. Junkies are always chasing the high, and gangstas are there to sell it to them. Gangs then get into fights over who has the 'right' to sell drugs in a certain area, gang wars break out, people die.
Drugs are smuggled into the US and are used to buy guns. No currency to track. Guns then smuggled into Canada. Liberals like to blame gun theft in Canada for gun crime but a lot of the weapons they are using are illegal for sale in Canada. The drugs smuggled into the US from Canada and Latin America then start the cycle all over again down there. Guns brough up feed the violence and keep the cycle going up here. The issue itself is so complicated, its mind boggling.

The only way to stop the gangs is to cut off their drugs and guns. Harsher sentences for trafficing, harsher sentences for using a gun in a crime. More money into vice squads to higher more cops and to equip them better. Having armed border guards trained to look for illegal weapons, and more border patrols to keep the guns out.
Once that's under control, attack the root problems of society that are pushing youths into the gang culture. Particularly focus on education. Encourage disadvantaged youths to explore trades. Home life also needs to change. Particularly these youths need same-sex role models to encourage them to better themselves. We also need to help drug users kick the habit so they don't need the high, and thus no longer feed the gangs. It's not something that can be done in a quick fix. I don't have all the answers. It will take years, millions of dollars, and dedication from all levels of government and society to solve this problem. It can be done though. The least we can do is try.

A New Low: Demeaning a People

I once made a remark that Martin's propaganda would make Joseph Gobbels pround. His latest attack ad could almost be right out of the mouth of the infamous Nazi propaganda minister.

The Liberals have released a misleading attack ad. The ad makes people believe that Stephen Harper and Giles Ducept are conspiring together to bring down the country. The picture itself was taken at a recent holocaust memorial dedication in which all party leaders attended. The leaders had no choice in seating. The ad itself has been declared a lie by both Harper and Ducept and has been called an insult by Jewish groups.

The Liberals have now stooped to a new low. Not only have they committed libel, they have also offended an entire religion. Jewish groups have stated that the Liberals are using the death of 6 million innocent people in WWII for their own political gains. I am not Jewish but I did have family who fought in the war. I have always been disgusted with Paul Martin but now I truly hate him. It just shows that he doesn't care who he runs down to keep his power. Martin has done a lot to harm Canada but this is just sick. If any Liberals reading this still have a shred of decency, they should switch their vote to NDP or Conservative, or some other party. Martin does not deserve to run a hotdog stand, let alone a nation after making these comments. The Liberal party issued a rather press release but has refused to apologize for the ad. As I said when it began, Martin's only tactic is to attack everybody else, he has no platform. Elections need not be this dirty.

Fab Hollywood

It's not very often that I comment about other countries but this one is bugging me. It is less common for me to comment on social issues so bare with me here.

Homosexuality is becoming a major (and irritating) political issue. Gay marriage has already been approved in some countries such as Canada, the UK, and parts of the US. I do not approve of it and I find it in poor taste. If they want to do it though, I know I cannot stop them as majority rules and increased gay 'rights' just happens to be the way the winds are blowing. What really bothers me is the gay agenda that everybody has now taken up. This is what I find the most disturbing, espcially with Hollywood recently. It has become hip for Hollywood stars to take on political issues, despite the fact that they know nothing about them. Take Bono for example. I don't think he has a degree in third world politics and I didn't vote for him.

The latest celebrity of sorts is Britain's "other queen", Elton John. He has just married his male 'lover' of several years. Like all Hollywood marriages, this is just another publicity stunt for the latest activism trend for the stars, gay rights. The top movie right now is Brokeback Mountain, about gay cowboys. It has already been nominated for numerous awards and is said to be a big Oscar contender. The problem, nobody has even see the movie yet. I can think of at least four other recent movies about gay people. Nearly every TV show has featured a gay episode or has introduced a gay character.

I'm just getting tired of people pushing the gay agenda. People are forcing it down our throats. Its ok if you want to be gay, just don't force your beliefs on other people. It's not like streight people parade in downtown Toronto declaring Streight Pride. Have a little modesty. The overwhelming display of extreme gay sexuality is offensive to many people and only proves the what anti-gay rights advocates have been saying.

Cattle Drive

The government of Ontario has just opened High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) on its 403 and 404 highways. These lanes are designed to help ease traffic on local highways by giving people who carpool a special lane. A car with a minimum of two people can drive in these lanes and it is claimed that they can shave up to 30min off a drive during the peak of rush hour.

I come to wonder though. What is the real purpose of these lanes. Fines for driving in these lanes with only one person in the car are quite steep. Up to $500. This seems like a lot when fines for more dangerous offenses (ie speeding) are much lower. It seems that the government of Ontario is trying to make another cash cow on fines for a realtively minor offense.

The lanes themselves are really only a bandaid solution to a much larger problem. That problem is that too many people with cars are coming into the GTA. Not everybody can carpool. There is nobody I know that takes the same route as I do so who do I carpool with? HOV lanes are a good short term idea but the money would have been better spent improving other types of transit.

CRTC Silencing Stern A Rights Violation

It sure has been a busy week for political talk.

Satellite radio is now in Canada. For as little as $13 a month, you can get hundreds of radio stations filled to the brim with Canadian and American content, well except for one America.

The titular king of shock radio and TV Howard Stern has been banned from Canadian airwaves. For those who don't know, Stern is known for his bathroom humor and has coloured American talk radio until the FCC shut him down this past year. Not being one to leave a good lewd joke behind, Stern has moved his show to Serius Satellite Radio. Serius is available in Canada but Stern will not be. The CRTC has determined that his show is too crude for Canadians' sensitive ears.

I have never been a fan of Stern. I watched his TV show a few times but never found it all that funny, but I didn't find it offensive either. The problem I have is this disturbing trend with the CRTC shutting stuff down. It is a violation of the constitution because it is silencing expression and free press. I don't care how crude it is, these are basic rights. If I call someone a jackass or tell a dirty joke, I'm not going to get arrested or have my mouth taped shut so why is this any different? This past year, the CRTC closed down a Quebec radio station because one person complained about something they heard. The show had 100,000 regular listeners who had no problem with the show but the CRTC still closed it down. As I said, very disturbing. I see the thought police are out again. The Canadian government will let someone like Fiddy Cent into Canada, a convicted fellon who preaches hate and violence against women, enter the country and perform but shuts up Stern for telling rude jokes? This has gone to far. It's time Canadians silenced the CRTC for good.

The Right to Non-Association?

On the campaign trail, Jack Layton is making his comrades glow red with glee. He supports a worker's rights bill. The bill promises workers basic rights including the right to form unions.

I am not against the rights of workers. It is important that workers be protected from abusive bosses, and vice versa. What I do disagree with is the right to unionize. What about the right not to unionize? The Canadian constitution is a tricky thing. It states that all Canadians have freedom of association. However, if your job requires you to join a union, you don't have the choice not to associate with them. Does this make sense? It doesn't to me either. I think this is a blatant abuse of people's rights. If someone does not want to join a union, why should they be made to. To me that is stripping away a basic right. I think we know who pulls the strings. Unions are worried about scab labour and the fact that freedom of non-association would make them obsolete in today's world. People would leave so they don't have to pay large amounts in dues. Unions do not have the right to strip rights away from others, nobody does and the constitution should be amended to reflect this.

If you want to secure workers rights, let them choose how they want to be represented. Do you hear me Mr. Layton?

Life's A Bowl of Popcorn

The Liberals never cease to amaze me. This week a senior advisor on the Paul Martin campaign stated that parents would simply waste their baby bonus on beer and popcorn.

The message I'm getting is that parents cannot be trusted to do what's right for their kids. Only the government knows what is right. The $1200 baby bonus is an excellent idea. The liberal idea of socialized daycare would not work. First off, a state run daycare system would be quite expensive. Second, would this be federal or provincial jurisdiction? Daycare falls under the category of education, which is provincial. In other words, the Liberals do not have the constitutional right to it. Are the provinces going to get the money? With Martin's track record on giving the provinces their fair share, I think its unlikely to ever happen. Thirdly, will all communities have access to it? Some don't even have schools yet their parents may still need child care.

I think the $1200 a month baby bonus takes care of the first and third problems, and eliminates the second entirely. Its cheaper than education because the government doesn't have to pay daycare worker's salaries and it doesn't need to maintain the buildings that they are in. In more remote communities, daycares aren't needed as the parents could use the money to pay someone or even use it so one of the parents can stay home.

The Liberals however are worried that people will abuse the money. Well, what about the welfare system? There are a large number of people on welfare who get the same amount of money plus benefits without doing a lick of work. I'm talking about the people who haven't fallen on rough times, but rather those who have made welfare a living. They are doing the same thing that the Liberals are worried about. Wasting others hard earned cash on beer and other junk. The Conservatives plan is putting hard earned money back into the pockets of parents, where it belongs. Paul Martin is only upset because he didn't think of it first. He has been promising a socialized daycare for years and we haven't seen any action. Will this election change any of that? I think not.

A Special Time of Year

It's the Christmas season again. The malls are packed with busy shoppers, the lights are going up, soon Santa will be on his way. It's the time of year to think fondly of our fellow man no matter what religion you belong to.

This year, I urge people to help those in need. However, don't just be lazy and give money. An anchient Chinese proverb says that if you teach a man to fish he will have food for life. Give a hand up instead of a hand out and volunteer your time with a organization of your choice. Make a difference.

Take my PM, Sleeze

Same crap, different election. Prime Minister Paul Martin has already started on his fear tactics by claiming Steven Harper doesn't love Canada. It is generally agreed upon that the question posed to Mr. Harper caught him off guard and was likely asked by a Liberal goon.

Liberals are very good at one thing, propaganda. I'm sure Joseph Gobbels would be proud. The problem, Canadians are starting to wise up to their usual tactics. Elections to the Liberals are not about why you should vote for them, but rather why you should not vote for the other guy. The truth is that the liberals lack any clear direction and its easier to mudsling. This is why campaigns have been so dirty lately. Mr. Martin is a very weak leader and if the party were smart, they'd remove him from power.

The NDP hopes to gain ground in this election. Layton claims that his party is what got things done in the last few months. Unfortunately this was at the expense of selling out the country in order to give Toronto more money. As I said in my last entry, Torontonians seem to think that the universe revolves around them. The NDP should not be given more power simply because they are too extreme and have too narrow a focus to really serve Canadian citizens. An NDP government did not work in Ontario and it would not work at the federal level either. Do we really want 'Layton Days'?

The Conservatives have some good ideas bit I think they are missing a lot of important points. The whole gay marriage issues was decided upon undemocratically and should have been open to a free vote. However, it is not a good idea to reopen the issue. The winds have been blowing in favour of it and it makes no sense to try and push it again. It is a lot more difficult to remove a "right" than to grant one. I believe their ideas to cut taxes is important. Canada needs government reforms and tax reforms. We waste too much. Too little of what Canadians are giving out is actually going where it is supposed to. I used the example of the gas tax in my last entry. In my opinion, GST should not just be reduced but eliminated entirely. At least it should be eliminated on essentials such as all food, shelter, fuel, and clothing expenses and I'd even go as far as to cut it from educational materials. Ontarians pay 15% which is just too much, some provinces pay even more. The federal government's role, with the exception of making equalization payments, is not that big when spending is concerned. They don't need all that money as they don't even spend it wisely when we give it to them. It's easy to forget that someone worked hard for them to have it.

It will be interesting to see where this all goes in the next two months. I'm predicting will have another Liberal minority. Canadians just don't get it. Anyway, people need to pay close attention to what's going on. All people above the age of 18 need to vote as well. You should not have the right to complain about political matters if you can vote but simply don't. Think of all those Iraqis that faced certain death in order to vote. What's your problem?

Fueling Transit Emptying Pockets

Another interesting Toronto idea. Well not so much interesting as, stupid. Very typical.

I now know why homeless people seem to hang around in Nathan Phillps Square. They aren't sleeping there, they're stuck in orbit around the centre of the universe. The latest idea out of the city comes in true Torontocentric fashion. The chair of the TTC wants the Government of Ontario to look into a $5 fee added onto annual licence plate renewals to help fund transit in the city. It was not mentioned whether this would only apply to Toronto residents or all Ontarians. Of course Toronto thinks its Ontario never mind the fact that 8 million Ontarians do not live in its borders. Will this money also fund other transit systems?

Let us not forget how much it costs to drive. $5 a year isn't much but its the principle. The cost of driving has been increasing while the roads are crumbling. The government already costs us money with their bad roads and over use of road salt. Drivers should not have to give more tax to pay for transit because the money is already there. Taxes wouldn't be so bad if the money was going where it was supposed to. If the government wants to solve the problem, try putting 100% or the gas tax into roads and transit instead of the current 5c, which is only about 20-25%. Where is the other 75% of the gas tax going?

Fighting A Loosing Battle

Milton residents are fighting a loosing battle against Town Hall. It seems the more we cry, the more they plug their ears.

Apparently, we're all seeing things. Milton doesn't have a traffic problem after all. I think my car must be having problems then. Why else would it take me twice as long to get to school as it did a couple of years ago, even when the roads are clear sailing during rush hour.

Housing development has run amuk. There are no plans to upgrade roads and other infrastructure. They want to block out the Escarpment with houses. The people stand up for their democratic right and are blatantly lied to. I'm talking about the recent town meeting discussing the Tramaine/Derry housing development. Complaints were given and the chief of the Planning Department blatantly lied to people. He stated that there was no traffic problem and that no permit had been given for the new development. This is despite the fact that work has already begun, illegally on the development. I suspect that dealings in this town are being made on the whim of $100 bills stuffed in a breifcase, rather than the whim of the voters.

Director of Planning Mr Mel Iovio should resign for lying to the people he is supposed to serve. If Mayor Krantz is smart, he will fire him ASAP. What this town is doing to its people is wrong. This cannot be allowed to continue.

Fighting Drugs with Drugs

Another delightful tale of our big brother to the east. Toronto has a drug problem, a bad drug problem. I'm not going to talk about the dealers though but of Toronto's latest "solution" to the drug problem.

Their solution? To get rid of drugs, they give the junkies, drugs. Sounds silly doesn't it. Well, they've been doing it in Vancouver with the heroine addicts for a little while now. These so called safe injection sites. A panel has recommended that the City of Toronto do something similar, except with the crack addicts. They want to give these people safe smoke houses, the crack they need, and the bongs to smoke it with.

I for one think this is THE dumbest idea I have ever heard. You don't keep giving an alcoholic more booze, so why give a crackhead more cocaine. People have truly lost their minds. This won't solve the drug problem. Indeed it will aggravate it by giving people a place to smoke all the crack they won't for free. (Courtesy of the tax payer of course) It sends the message that it's ok to do illegal substances, and it's ok to keep doing them without any consequences. What the city should be doing is offering help to get these people off the drugs. We need tougher drug laws and better treatment programs. I'll even take it one step further, if Toronto were to adopt these smoke houses, it would be in violation of the Charter of Rights. Everybody has the right security of the person. Drugs, especially crack harm. The government is therefore harming people which is illegal in itself. You can't keep fighting fire with fire, you'll just end up with a lot of smoke. What a mess it is.

Dumb Kids, Dumb Government

A report has recently been released that Ontario has the highest high scool drop out rate in Canada. I think they said one in three kids will drop out, but don't quote me.

Why is this? Many people blame the new curriculum brought in by Mike Harris in the late 90s. They claim it's just too hard. I have first hand knowledge of this. My class was the first to go through the new curriculum and was the first to graduate highschool in four years instead of five. Was it hard, yes it was. I considered myself to be an average student. I didn't get sky high marks. I worked hard, and was accepted into all four universities I applied to.

Now they are talking about dumbing down the curriculum to keep more kids in school. This really upsets me. Why should some other kid get a place in the same university while having to work less in highschool. This is not fair to me and all the others like me. The reason the curriculum was made harder, was Ontario couldn't keep up with other countries like Japan and the UK in terms of education. Kids in the UK enter university at 16 or 17 and already have a year or two of higher education under their belts before out kids even think of it.

I agree with Mr. McGuinty keeping kids in highschool until at least 18 or until they graduate, which ever comes first. I think everyone should have a highschool diploma. A lot of changes need to be made to the way we think about education though. First off, we need to stop pushing every kid into university. It is not for everyone. There needs to be more emphasis on skilled trades. Parents are part of this problem. A skilled trades person can make as much as any university grad, sometimes more depending on how much their skill is in demand. We also need to switch back to a student orientated education system. Let the teachers whine. Their job is pretty easy when compared to most others. I don't know any factory worker who gets eleven weeks paid vacation.
What we need is an education system that encourages a students skills. Kids are smart, they'll choose the right path for the most part. There are some kids who are just bound to drop out anyway. They're just can't deal with the real world, a sad fact of life.

Another Oakridges

I've brought this up before and I will again. There is a public question period coming up for a proposed 1800 house on the North East of Termaine and Derry road. Back in the 1980s, residents in the area where told that no major building would be allowed south of the CN tracks because this was enviornmentally protected land. Now they are telling people that developers can now build there. Is this not another Oakridges?

I do live in view of the Escarpment so this move will ruin my view which I have enjoyed for the past 20 years. We always thought we'd always have this view. Not only that, it will ruin property values of the people in the area so that some developer can sell a $100,000 house for $500,000 because it's "close to nature" or some crap like that. Close to nature? I don't think you can be if you destroy it to build the house.

So why build in an enviromentally sensitve area anyway. There is plenty of land to the north and east of town. Do we really need housed up to the base of the escarpment? A meeting is being held on October 24th for people to speak their minds about it. It is likely the town council will pass the new zoning anyway without listening to the people. I urge Milton residents to attend this meeting and also to go over the heads of Town Hall. Contact your local MPP as well as Mr. McGuinty. With the mess over Oakrides, we may have an upper hand before any contracts are made. The province does have the power to strike down this sort of municipal decision. If we don't act, we will loose this precious natural treasure to a sea of houses.

Toronto's Sickle and Hammer

Toronto's mayor and police board, they're communists. It's obvious in the way they act. The Toronto's police union has gone on a work to rule campaign. It's not often I agree with unions but they are right. This administration is anti-police. They won't let them do their job, they won't raise their pay, they won't hire more cops, and they want the existing ones to work longer without pay. Sure, they're only being asked to work an extra 40 hours a year. However, how would you like to loose a weeks vacation. I'm sure the people in Toronto's council wouldn't. This must be the only city that has a dumber administration than Milton does.

Toronto's police union wants the Police Services Board chair Pam McConnel to step down. She's a partner in crime to Mayor Miller. These two are devote Marxists, just short of admitting it. They are not even NDP, which usually sides with unions. They are letting their beliefes jeopardize the safety or Toronto's citizens. We already have snipers taking pot shots at cops on patrol.

We live in a country where the governments at all levels cannot protect the people. Well, I should say they WILL NOT protect the people. They serve no purpose anymore and people should send this message loud and clear come election day. Remember that municiple elections should effect you more than provincial or federal ones. People of Toronto, vote in 2006 and get these commies out.

Toronto Dumps on Us

At last, some Milton news. Unfortunately, it's very bad.

In the news today, Halton region has been named on a list from the Ontario government as a possible location to take Toronto's trash. For those who don't know, Michigan has been planning to close the border to Canadian garbage. The McGuinty government had been keeping the list of possible dumb sites for eight months.

According to CTV News, the dump just east of Town was designed to last for 30 years. If it where to take Toronto's trash, it would be overwhelmed in less than a year. Not only that, it would mean hundreds of garbage trucks travelling up Hwy 25 from the 401 and the QEW, through residential areas. How nice. I'm sorry but why should Toronto's trash be our problem. Mayor David Miller is perhaps the worst mayor Toronto has ever had. He doesn't seem to worry at all about Toronto's biggest problems. Why doesn't Toronto take out the trash at city hall, and don't even think to unload it on us.

The New Governor General

I think it's time we got rid of the office of the Governor General. The GG is a money sucking figurehead. Why does a sovereign nation need a representative to the government of another country? We are always talking about Canadian Sovereignty but we are still sucking at the British teat.

In a few days we will have a new Governor General. Her name is Michaelle Jean. A former French national and suspect Quebec separatist. Yet another token French position to keep them happy. What screams Canada more than a CBC newscaster and separatist. Somebody that nobody outside of Quebec that nobody has even heard of. I'd say Quebec can go to hell. Is there nobody in any other province that can do the job? I'm sure there is. Jean should not become the new GG. She is a traitor to this nation. There is overwhelming proof of this. Someone who supports tearing a nation apart should not be its commander in chief. Either Paul Martin is truly insane for appointing her or he is also trying to destroy Canada. Canadians must never trust the Liberals.

My proposals to change the Governor General.
1. Make it an elected position. Make them like a president. They must run a campaign to prove why they should have a position. Make them accountable.
2. Keep them appointed but they must also be confirmed by the legislature in a free vote. The same thing they do with Supreme Court Justices in the US.
3. Eliminate the position of governor general and combine the position with Prime Minister or Speaker of the House.

The Growing Move to Autocracy

Does anybody remember the episode of Star Trek which featured the character Khan? Khan was a dictator on Earth in the year 1996 who appeared in the future. It was claimed that in this year, Earth was ruled by petty dictators and they started the third world war.

Now, this is just fictional TV, right? Of course it is, but for how long. There seems to be a growing movement towards dictactorial governments. It's not that they are being installed, but rather are wanted. Odd. It is a sacred right of democracy to choose it or reject it but I don't think many people realise what autocracy entails.

The Hippie movement is back. They are as socialist as ever but they seem to favour dictatorships now. They're a little confused about the facts of their own belief system. They favour Saddam Husain in an indirect way. They make claims that removing him from power was unjust. Although it can be claimed that the reasons for going to Iraq where unjust, judging by the reactions of the Iraqi people, it was just to remove Saddam.

They do favour dictatorship. Look at Canada, the Liberal Party knows full well that they will be voted in, again and again. They do what ever they want and ignor the will of the voters. They are becoming dictators. People don't seem to mind though. This is very dangerous. Dictatorship means abuse of power, oppression of people. These are not good things people. Why do they like it though, simple, every decision is made for them. People do not like to think for themselves today, they want their government to decide for them. As a people, we need to get out of this way of thinking and begin leading our own lives and start making rouge governments accountable for their actions.

Sin City

Still no Milton news so I take you to Toronto, the scene of recent gunplay. The media has colourfully named this activity as the "Summer of the Gun". Now this is a very touchy subject so you might not want to read this if your easily offended. I don't want any emails.

Ok, rant mode on.

Every week we hear about another shooting in Toronto. This Friday alone (Sept 16th) there where five shootings. At least two where fatal. Perhaps in some morbidly perverse way, I hope the homicide rate goes up to knock it into the thick skulls of politicians that Toronto is not a safe city anymore. Toronto police stated that there are at least 70 street gangs in Toronto with about 2000 members.
Who are these gangs, well they are mostly black, and mostly Jamaican. They are usually lower class. They join these gangs for a variety of reasons, both social and economic. Many don't have strong male roll models so they join gangs seeking that. Some just think its cool to be a gangsta. Others do it because they can make more in a day pimping or selling drugs than most people doing an honest job can. It's really nothing new.

Now Toronto's government has some ideas. More jobs for black youth. I think this is countered by my last statement above. If I can make $1000 a day selling weed, why would I get a job for $10-20 an hour. That's why so many gangstas are driving around in BMWs. They may be poor before they join but they are not poor after.
Others suggest more social programs. These do work to an extent but they don't change the culture that pushes people into gangs. Better education is the key. Many black students are lied to, through their own culture, that they will just be kept down by the racist white man and that there is no point in trying to compete with him. Racism is a cop-out. Someone in the TDS thought it would be a good idea to have black only schools. He was forced to eat some Jim Crow after making that statement. These wouldn't work as they'd just reinforce the above lie. That they'd never be able to function in a school with white kids and white teachers. Dalton McGuninty had dismissed the idea as dumb, and he knows dumb ideas.

Policing is also the key. This leaves Toronto's mayor in a mixed up state. You see David Miller is a devote Marxist. It's very evident in the way he talks and the way he tries to run things. He doesn't want more cops. Marxists believe that if there where no state police, then the people would self-police, the world would be better. Unfortunately this has never worked. If this where true than how do explain the KGB in the USSR. Miller did not want to hire any more cops but has since been forced too. The problem is, a lot of Torontonians share his views. They don't trust cops. They think that all the police are out to do it victimize the innocent. They make it policy to go out and harrass young black men. BS, plain BS. I would not want to be a police officer in this day and age as it must be the most stressful job on the planet. You arrest a guy for comitting a serious crime, he gets out on bail or probation a few days later and comitts another serious crime. Then you get to be called a racist for arresting him in the first place. The legal system doesn't help. It's OK to put someone like Martha Stuart away for getting a stock tip but rape, trafficing and attempted murder do not deserve serious punishments? Anyone carrying an illegal weapon for the purposes of crime should get manditory jail time. We must deter the use of guns and knives by putting people who use them away for a long time. Another thing, why does Farmer Joe have to register his hunting rifle to keep coyotes from stealing his chickens but these gangstas are carrying illegal weapons with no conciquences? Farmer Joe will get punished if he doesn't register his gun.

Update on Sharia

Today, Mr. McGuinty has outlawed Sharia law along with other faith based tribunals. This just proves you can't screw up all the time. This includes Jewish and Catholic family laws as well. This is great news. Church and state should be strictly separated.

However, now Jews and Muslims are upset that they can't use their laws. Boo hoo. If they'd like, I can given them directions to the airport. Democracy and religion don't mix and if you don't like that, there's the door. Canada is not Isreal, Canada is not Iran.

Liberal Hypocracy

There is a big problem with Canada, liberal hypocracy. This is something I see every day while attending a university, on TV, and on the internet.

Liberals are an interesting folk. They have formed the government for the last 12 years but seem to think they are being kept down by the conservative. The conservative tries to silence them with his facist visions. Is this really true? No. In fact it is the other way around. Conservatives in this country listen to liberals and simply say "that's fine for you but I don't agree." It is always important to listen to the opposing side. Liberals however go absolutely insane when a conservative experesses their viewpoint. A writer with the school newspaper was pummled with a barrage of childish names by his liberal peers for expressing his agreement with the war in Iraq. They called him a fat slob who sits and watched Fox News all day. I'm not rewording anything, that's what they actually called him. I was once kicked off an internet forum because I said Michael Moore's movies where innacurate. I was refering to Bowling for Columbine which is indeed full of things taken out of context. Funny enough I wasn't flaming or spaming. Somebody said they liked him and I said I didn't. Just a one post reply.

Everywhere it's Harper's evil or Bush is stealing oil. Heven for fend if some gay guys can't get married. The world will end if a woman has to use a condom for birth control instead of abortion. We conservatives are not the stereotype that liberals portray us. I myself am in favour of stem cells, some abortion, womens rights, cutting tuition fees, and a good balanced and free multicultural society. I am also in favour of good business, more police, better national security, reduced welfare, two tier health, getting rid of Quebec, immigration restrictions, cutting taxes, reducing buraucracy, and a student orientated education system. If we want to thrown religion in, I hate it. I don't believe in god and I think church and state should be strictly separated. There goes the American liberal sterotype that all conservatives are Christian fundamentalists. I do believe in good family values and this is where I think ture virtue begins, not in a church.

Then I hear about government corruption. All conservatives are out to push big corporations and those are the only people they work for. They are corrupt and don't care about anything but money. Bush is just in Iraq to get oil for his buddies.
Um, Paul Martin is a multi-millionare shipping magnate. His latest pet is a big wig at a certain multinational car parts company. In fact the Liberals rely on big corporations for moeny. There is also the issue that Cretien and his goons stole millions from taxpayers. Is that not corruption?
And there's the thought that all corporations are bad, making millions off the blood of the working class. Also false. Most corporations are small. Their owners are just trying to make a living. The idea of incorporating is reducing personal risk. Only the company can be sold off and a bad business deal won't leave you homeless. My parents own a small corporation and make about the same as their top employees who are labourors. All conservatives are rich multi-millionares? A lie.
As for Bush's oil, where did it go? Oh, it's still in the ground being managed by, *gasp* Iraqis?! Bush had other motives for going to war, not oil. He was misinformed first of all, he also has made getting Saddam a personal issue. If he was getting oil, why aren't we drowning in the stuff instead of paying a small fortune to fill up?

About the Hurricane Katrina. People are bashing Bush about his slow reaction time. It is true, he goofed. American was not prepared. However, I don't see democrats exactly running to help. The liberals began taking advantage of this disaster to bring up their issue of race. There was rampant racism, blacks where being left to die. Infact it was the liberal media that began labling the black residentes as looters and refugees. Then they began saying that Bush hates blacks. If bush hated blacks, why does he have a black woman as his third in command? He had a black man before her. All conservatives are racist. Yet another lie.

Liberals need to stop stereotyping people. Liberals pretend to fight stereotyping but they do it to us conservatives? They need to get with the program and end the hypocracy.

Going National

Don't worry, I'm not completely steering away from Milton. However, I'm going to try something different during luls when there isn't much going on in town. I'm going to select a provincial or national issue to talk about that will effect us all.

This week, Sharia. This is something that really makes me mad. For those who don't know what Sharia is, it is a form of Islamic law used to settle civil and marital disputes. Muslims wish to use it to solve their disputes instead of British Common Law that is currently used. Sharia traditionally favours males in disputes and subjects the "guilty" to often harsh punishments. These punishments can include social exile, physical abuse, and even death. Concider a woman who has been sexually assulted. Under Sharia, she is concidered to be the cause of the the assult and therefore must be punished. Rape is equated to adultery. The rapist may or may not be punished. This sort of thing seems rediculous to most of the modern world but is quite normal in many Islamic countries.

Anybody who even gives thought allowing Sharia is treading on dangerous ground. Quebec has already outlawed it, good for them but there is still talk about it in Ontario. Is Dalton McGuinty out of his mind?!

Sharia is blatantly unconstitutional and even threatens Canadian sovereignty. It directly violates equality rights, especially for women, it violates legal rights, and it sets forth a dangerous double standard. Why should one group have their own special set of laws? This basically makes a mockery of our justice system, something that doesn't have a lot of credability as it is. Sharia will create a rift between Islamics and others. I don't care who you are but you do not march into somebody elses country and demand they change their laws and their ways just so it suits you. If Islam is so great and Islamic law is so great, just stay in the Middle-East and don't come forcing your beliefs on us. I know I'll be accused of being racist or Islamaphobic, which is not true. I'm just defending our nation, its people, its history and culture, and most of all its constitution. Allowing these people to have their own sets of laws in fact anti-multicultural.

Sharia is a slap on the face to every person who fought for freedom, to every woman who fought for equaulity, and to everybody else who hold this freedom and equality dear.

Update on August 8th Story

Derry road between Bronte St and the new James Snow Parkway has been put out for tender by Halton Region. This will include the delapedated bridge over the 16 Mile Creek. Work should begin Spring 2006. This is one year behind scheduel.

Unfortunately, there are no plans to widen it further at the moment. Anybody who commutes to Mississauga will know that Derry should be widened up to Highway 407 to join the four lane widening that Peel Region had done some time ago.

Reduce, Reuse

Another Halton Region beef that effect Milton. I find our lack of recycling appauling. (my environmental views must be confusing our liberal readers) We only get recycling picked up once every two weeks. Judging by the amount of recycling myself and my neighbours put out every other Wednesday, this is certainly not enough. They keep wanting us to recycle but they don't provide the service. The lack of service only encoureges people to send more to the dump as they can't stand the bottles and newspapers piling up in their yards. Other regions including Peel and Toronto have weekly pickup. We are supposed to be a wealthy region but where told they can't afford to pick it up more often. This is BS, they're just being cheap.
Another problem is that some office buildings don't have recycle pickup. I'm not sure wether this is the landlords problem but there should be some service. We run a family business on Alliance Rd. The office building we rent doesn't get recycle pickup. Most of the stuff we generate is recycling and I have to cart it home for residential pickup. Our businesses need recycling service too.

Lastly I'd also like to see the region provide more big pickup days. Once every other month is also not enough. They wouldn't even take some old plastic blinds I put out this week so I guess I have to wait until September, with these little blinds sitting in my garage, before I can get rid of them. The region better start offering some better waste disposal services soon, or we'll be buried up to our eyeballs in flyers and pop bottles.

Say No to Parking Meters

The Town of Milton has proposed putting parking meters in the Downtown. I just have one thing to say, WHY? Why do we need parking meters. It's not like we get that many tourists. Most of them are going to Escarpment Country and Mohawk. This seems to be another blatant tax grab against Milton residents and businesses. Remember that this is the council that has raised our taxed about 5% annually over the last few years. I thought they supposedly had all that money from the Casino not to mention the new developments.

Local business owners in the Downtown are pleading with people to sign a petition to stop the installation of the meters. They feel the meters will scare people away from our downtown. They're right. If you get the chance, sign the petition. It has been posted in many Downtown shops. Help support our local economy and not our greedy local government.

Toxic Water and Tree Murderers

I had some more thoughts on the environment of this town, while drinking a glass of water. I noticed that the water in town has been getting more foul tasting in recent years. This issue has nothing to do with the Town of Milton but Halton Region. I've noticed my water ressembles pool water, not drinking water. Even through those filter jugs I can still taste it, Chlorine. Chlorine is a neccessary link in the chain used to keep our water safe and drinkable. However, after the Walkerton disaster, it seems that there is now an excessive amount in the water. Either that or it's not being filtered out properly. I cannot help but to think what this is doing to our long term health. I'm on well water from the Kelso Resivoir which used to taste really good but now I'm not sure weather I should take a cool drink or go for a cool swim in my next glass. Some days are worse than others.
----------------------------------------------------------------

One of the greatest legal battles in recent years in the town has been the infamous tree cutting case. I don't have all the details except that some guy cut down some trees, on his own property that he shouldn't have. Thousands are being spent on this case. Of course if the Town wants to cut down some trees to make way for a housing developement behind EC Durry Highschool, that's ok. It's also ok that a certain company who wants to expand a certain quary can tear down some trees too. This is what happens when you install a group of slack jawed yokles to run a town. Now Toronto has it on the right track environmentally speaking. There will be no more big filthy jets at the Island Airport, of course all that pollution from spilt blood is still a problem. However, that topic is for another day on another blog.

Milton's Diverse Wildlife: The Common Road Kill

This week I'd like to talk about the environment in town. Particularly the toll that urban sprawl has been taking on it. It seems that I am seeing more animals lying dead on the side of the road than roaming in the fields. This is a sympton of careless planning.

For a town that is surrounded by one of the province's most majestic natural formations, Milton seems to have a lack of green space. Parks are going up, this is true. Unfortunately the contractor who is doing them is a little behind scheduel. Drumquin Park was over a year behind for a one month job. Most of the new parks are going into the new part of town, even then they are small with little to attract people there. As for the old part, the Town seems to care little. Last year there was an outrageous proposal to turn Bronte Meadows park into another housing development! This is the only major park for people on the south side of town. Isn't it funny how they want to take away parks that people want but they build a hockey arena that nobody wanted. I would also like to mention the close calls that the BMX track and the Oakville Model Flying Club suffered when the town threatend to turn their venues at Drumquin into a nature trail. Anybody who's been to Drumquin knows that the only nature in that park is tall thorny weeds and a muddy creek. They also had proposed a bon fire area where the flying club is. The perfect place for teenagers to drink beer and smoke weed without being seen. Real smart. It's nice to know out town's planning committee is thinking. There where also numorous popular events cancelled at Drumquin in 2004 due to the builder's excuses.

There is another issue that stuck a nerve with me. My parents moved to our current location in 1983. One of the things they liked most about the house was the view of the Escarpment. When they moved in, they where told by the Town that there would be no new building south of the CN tracks. This was due to the environmental sensitivity of the Escarpment. We where recently shocked to find out that the Town was backing down on the promise they made over 20 years ago. A housing development has been planned going from the tracks to Tramaine road. Can you say Oakridges children? I wonder where what Mr. McGuinty has to say about this. Probably nothing, as he did nothing about Oakridges. I am a supporter of business but not bad business. The Town is in bed with the developers, probably receiveing kickbacks. They've just handed the town over to them. Soon the green space will be gone, we will live in a sea of houses. Perhaps we should rename ourselves South Brampton because that's where we're heading. There is plenty of space to build to the east and north of town so why ruin on of our greatest natural wonders?

Milton Transit Needs to Grow

Continuing with this weeks traffic stories, I'd to address the public transit situation in town. Milton does have buses, that's great. I feel that public transit will be one of the keys to freeing Milton from it's snarling traffic. The revival of our bus system has been one of the most positive moves the town has made in recent years.

Some positive things with this new plan are evident looking at transit maps. Most schools and shopping places are accessible on the map. Price is a bit high for such a small system but cheaper than other municipalities. There are a few improvements that should be made.

First off I feel we need more transit hubs and route intersections. The GO Station is a bit out of the way for many residents. Hubs should be set up in Highpoint Business Park, the Mall, the Dairy Plaza, and at Crossroads. I would also like to see service to Highpoint and Crossroads, the latter of which is being planed but hasn't been put into place.
I would also like to see an express route to Mississauga's Medowvail Town Centre. MTC is a busy hub which I use frequently. From there it is possible to get anywhere in the GTA including Brampton and Toronto. The GO Bus does go there but it costs more and doesn't run frequently. Oakville Transit, who runs the busses, already has a deal with Mississauga. They use the South Common Mall on Burnamthorp as a hub. We should do the same. We could also have express routes to Oakville, somewhere that the GO Bus doesn't go.

As for the GO train, well I've already mentioned the problem with it. It doesn't run frequently enough. I would like to see expanded train and bus service on the Milton line. It would be nice to hop on the train and go to a Leafs game or go shopping in Toronto. Anybody who has driven on the Gardener or the 401 will know why it would be a good idea. The Milton line runs through some of the most densely populated and nicest areas of Halton and Peel Regions. Milton, Streetsville, Erindale, Union Station, all great places. Why not give people greater access to them.

Keep up the good work and remember to keep transit growing for out growing town.

Gas, Break, Honk

Milton has several major issues that need to be addressed. They are as follows.
-Urban Sprawl
-The Environment
-Traffic & Noise Polution
-Lack of Commercial/Retail Space

The one I wish to address this week is traffic. Simply put, there is too much of it with too little space for it. Back when Milton was a town of 30,000 people, two lane roads and stop signs where adequate. We have reached over 40,000 now with 20,000 more expected to be here in the next few years. As we stand right now, those 10,000 new people brought with them a lot of cars. It has come to the point where our roads are so stuffed with cars and trucks, driving in town has become a nightmare.

I feel comfortable driving in Mississauga, I visit there frequently to shop and go to school. In Milton, I'm on a razors edge. I was run off the road the other day coming of the 401 onto James Snow. I have seen so many near misses it's not funny. There have already been a few bad accidents. How many more do we need, how many have to be killed for the people in Town Hall to turn off their Dukes of Hazzard reruns and fix the problem.

I have identified the following problem areas.
-Laurier & Ontario: The intersection is crooked creating a turning hazzard.
-Ontario: Speeding over 20kph is common
-Bronte & Steels: Rail bridge and dip blocks view making turning onto Steels from Bronte dangerous.
-Steels Between Martin & Ontario: Speed limit is too low for this kind of road, it should be 60kph all the way up.
-Brittania Between Hwy 25 & Trafalgar: Cyclists pose a hazzard on this road as it is too narrow for them. They should not be using it.
-Steels & Wheelabrator: Heavy traffic on Steels and poorly syncronized lights make it difficult for cars and transport trucks to exit onto Steels, needs lights.
-Laurier & Vanier: Tight bend in road and high fence blocking view makes exiting form the west side of Vanier onto Laurier dangerous. Needs four way stop.
-Dairy Road: Way too narrow for traffic volume. Was supposed to be widened to a more satisfactory four lanes but this was postponed for unknown reasons.
-Dairy & Fourth Line: Fourth Line should never have been closed until the James Snow extension was finished. Instead we have a traffic light to nowhere. People going north on the open portion of Fourth cannot turn left onto Dairy due to uneccessary road cones.
-Tramaine & Steels: Lights are needed here.
-Dairy & Ontario: We need turn signals here badly. Particularly for left turns onto Dairy from Ontario.
-James Snow & Highway 401: This must be the only highway interchange with no traffic lights. Lights are badly need here.
Hwy 25 & Brittania: Turning lanes are needed.
-Railway grade separations are badly needed on Dairy, Main, and Tompson.
-Closing access to Nipissing from Main was a dumb idea which cut off mall parking. Lights are also needed at Nipissing & Tompson.
-The proposal for access off Pearson Way into Bishop Reading HS was a very good idea. This should be done for safety reasons.

Noise pollution on our roads is also a serious concern. My house backs onto Bronte. I cannot leave my windows open without going deaf. Truck noise was the biggest issue but this has faded. I feel sorry for people who back onto Dairy, Tompson, and Steels. The noise they put up with must be far worse. I know people who live near Sam Sherret who say they can hear noise from the 401. This could be easily solved with better traffic controls and noise barriers. Unfortunately, the Town is too cheap to put them up, telling people that if they want them, they must pay for them. Excuse me but what do we pay taxes for. The Town has since offered to pay half for some Dairy residents but this is not enough.

I wonder how long the perverbial colesterol of Town Hall will sit in our clogged veins of steel. The time for action is now. Do we want to be an Oakville or Mississauga, or would we rather be another Brampton or Toronto. The latter is where we're headed. Take a drive to these places and you'll see what I mean.

Welcome to The Martin's Mill News

Welcome to my blog, The Martin's Mill News. This is a political blog for residents of Milton, Ontario. It has recently come to my attention that there is a lot of confusion regarding the town's current situation. I found that local media is not critical enough of Town Hall.. I've also discovered that our councilors often do not listen to what people are saying. In fact, the only people who seem to be running this town are the slew of developers gobbling up land.

About myself. I have lived in Milton all my life, which would be 20 years. I may be young but I'm no idiot. I am currently a second year History/Political Science student at UofT. My political opinions are right leaning but I do not ignor opposing points of view. I will try to keep this in mind as I write.

This site is also not just a critical one. Praise will be given but only when it is deserved. I hope you will enjoy reading this weekly publication.
